Art In Letters

Typography, the art of words, letters in creating. Creating what? Signs, signs everywhere there are signs. Small signs, big signs, documents to billboards. Books, magazines, even the font on your iphone. This is all about the letter.

Letters makes statements, not just literally but visually too. Product branding  makes us recognize something by the color in one simple letter or symbol. Think soft drink products, sports gear, large shipping companies.

Let's back it up a little, typography is used to create logo's, labels for drink and food products. See again, it all comes back to art is everywhere. This is National Arts and Humanities Month. Today's theme is Typography.

My little logo is simple: LHP but done in a cursive style and tiled.
I worked with my friends Eric & Lori Rice to design their logo for Willow Oaks craft cider and wine. The main focus for the logo was on the Willow Oaks. Creating again something simple, elegant but reflecting what the product was all about, which was something natural. The W in Willow was transformed into the mountains seen from the Middletown, MD valley. Adding in a graphic design of a Willow Oak tree, turning the letter K into a willow oak. Originally we had tried to bring the mountain shape behind the K tree  but it created many challenges. It worked just fine separating the two elements. These trees grow on the organic farm that hosts the tasting room for their hard ciders. If you would like to check out the logo and the labels on their ciders they are open Sat. & Sun. 11-5. Address: 6219 Harley Rd., Middletown, MD

To end this wordy piece, here are a few signs I saw along the road this summer while driving across the country.
